Get set for fireworks and fiestas on Costa Brava’s golf coast

costabrava2-20mar12Golfers visiting Spain’s north-east shores this summer can experience the explosive sights and sounds of the 42nd ‘Trofeo Vila de Blanes’ Costa Brava International Fireworks Competition, from July 24-27, 2012.

Dramatic pyrotechnic displays will light up the night skies above the Mediterranean coastal town of Blanes in Costa Brava, which has hosted the international event for over a century.

This annual competition attracts competitors from around the world, keen to demonstrate their artistic firework displays, which include both aerial and aquatic compositions, and highlight the natural setting of the iconic Sa Palomera rock just off the shores of Blanes.

Ramón Ramos, Director at Costa Brava Girona Tourist Board, commented: “Every year, we welcome over one million tourists and local residents rank this event among Costa Brava’s most popular and traditional of festivals, marking the start of the summer holidays. There is an electric atmosphere along the beachfront with music, open air performances and inviting food stalls.”

The winner of the ‘Trofeo Vila de Blanes’ Costa Brava is not only invited to participate in the fireworks display held in Girona in November as part of the 2012 Sant Narcís Festival - the city’s biggest annual fiesta, which celebrates Girona’s patron saint, also known as ‘the Saint of Flies’ - but they will also participate in the following year’s contest.

Visitors to the fireworks fiesta can also combine the explosive festivities with a round of golf at one of the many courses in the Costa Brava region.

Just 30 minutes from Blanes awaits PGA Golf Catalunya Resort, Spain’s best golf course and a World Top 100 venue. While Club de Golf Costa Brava, one of the region’s oldest golf courses, and the pleasant Papalus Golf Pitch & Putt course, host of the European Pitch & Putt Championships, are also popular golf destinations.

Slightly further afield visitors will find the wonderfully maintained layout of Golf Girona, whilst Emporda Golf, with 36 holes set in beautiful parkland, and Golf Platja de Pals, a British design on the seafront, hold rich appeal. For those looking for a quick round, the Par-3 Gualta course is also recommended.

Located an hour north of Barcelona and easily accessible thanks to Girona-Costa Brava Airport - an important Ryanair hub - the region is also home to many attractions, Michelin-starred restaurants and a wide range of comfortable accommodation. These include the five-star Hotel Peralada Wine Spa & Golf that enjoys a prime location in north Costa Brava, the four-star Emporda Golf Hotel & Spa at Gualta that offers a wealth of facilities, and the three-star Hotel Costa Brava on the seafront at Platja d’Aro.
